May Masterclass: Shanyse Strickland, New York Freelancer, Jazz, Neo-Soul, R&B Artist | Non-conventional Career Choices for the Horn Player
Shanyse Strickland is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and arranger. While French horn is her primary instrument, Ms. Strickland plays a variety of woodwind and brass instruments. Originally from Akron, OH, Shanyse began as a flutist and then switched to the French horn. Strickland earned a Bachelor’s degree at Youngstown State University and Master’s degree at Duquesne University, both in Horn Performance. She studied with the late great Bill Slocum, Zach Smith of the PSO, and Stacie Mickens, professor of horn at UNT. Stepping away from the traditional ways of horn, she obtained an Artist Diploma in Jazz French Horn in May, 2021.
Shanyse has had a career full of new and innovative experiences with world class musicians. She played trombone and flute for the reuniting Ohio Players and feature flute of a local group called the Level Up Band. Paying homage to rock-n-roll pioneer Betty Davis, she performed as a guest artist with the Davis’ original band as a part of an independent documentary filmed in Pittsburgh. Shanyse was the winner of the 2016 Jazz Solo Competition at the International Horn Symposium (IHS), where she performed in front of jazz composer and hornist David Amram, along with a host of other jazz hornists. After relocating to New Jersey, Shanyse performed at the 2019 and 2021 Heisman Trophy Ceremonies and Galas aired on ESPN. Expanding her love for writing music, Shanyse has written and published four original works, one of which was performed by the horn section of the New Haven Symphony entitled “Moods.” Shanyse has composed commissioned works for the brass faculty at the University of Texas, along with many other soloists around the country.
Shanyse currently freelances and teaches an independent studio of students in greater New Jersey. She is continuously composing and doing track work for various artists around the country. We eagerly anticipate this unique upcoming masterclass!
